Addressing the Aviation Maintenance Technician Shortage: A Crucial Step for the Industry’s Future The aviation sector is on the road to recovery post-pandemic, but a significant challenge persists: a shortage of aviation maintenance technicians (AMTs). Current estimates suggest a shortfall of 12,000 to 18,000 AMTs, which could persist or even worsen over the next decade. Factors like an aging workforce, low career uptake, and rising passenger demand (IATA predicts 8.2 billion passengers by 2037) are contributing to this gap. Boeing’s 2021 Commercial Market Outlook indicates that 610,000 new AMTs will be needed globally through 2041, with the trade association ADS saying that there are currently 10,000 vacancies in the UK alone. To meet this demand, the industry must increase the number of trained AMTs by at least 20% above those already being trained. Strategies to address this could include: ✈️ Increasing financial compensation: Making the role more attractive by acknowledging the high skill and training required. ✈️ Diversifying recruitment efforts: Expanding marketing to underrepresented groups (currently, <10% of aviation and aerospace engineers are female, for example). ✈️ Mentorship programs: Leveraging the experience of current professionals to guide and inspire the next generation. These BACB (Boeing Airframe Control Bearings) were the last commercial aviation parts we #swisslathe machined before canceling our AS9100 cert due to new Climate Change audit requirements (♻️👈🤡) Exiting commercial aviation really freed up a lot of not just #machining capacity -- but more overhead & financial capacity too Handling the low volumes, sporadic demand, tons of outside special processes with proprietary Boeing specs that even the D1-4426 source controlled vendors never want to do - not to mention the poor payment terms too that tie up cashflow for months... just isn't worth it these days. </rant> Too bad for Boeing as we were about 25% lower cost due to our lean flow & 24x7 operations which helped their Distribution Services division win the FAA repair and overhaul contracts that involved these and about 13 other similar A286 stainless bearing parts with +/- .0002" tolerances we also made in their work package over last 5 years. For us, the math is clear in firing aviation. Even when charging higher prices for aviation work, our profit margins and cashlow has measurable double-digit better performance when we allocate capacity instead to other customer markets like drones, pew-pews, electronics/semiconductors, valves, industrial etc. These customers are sooooo much easier to work with too. Plus, unlike Boeing and similar where we see our purchasing agents turn over 3 times in year (I am not joking), with our other customers we can actually build stronger relationships. Apparently I'm not the only one who feels this way either. When I've chatted with dozens of other owners of small #precisionmachining businesses, many of whom have been supplying #aviation parts for 10-20 years... lots of them are saying "no -quote" too. Prediction: the commercial aviation #supplychain is going to get worse, more limited, more constricted, and more volatile. Coming into 2020, before the disruptions from the COVID-19 pandemic, #aerospace already significantly trailed peer industries. From 2020 to 2023, these peer industries saw negligible change or at least slight improvement in the financial health of the supply chain --> automotive was up 1% and advanced #electronics was up 4%. Meanwhile, the financial health of aerospace supply chain *decreased* an incremental 9%. According to a McKinsey study of overall procurement, aerospace companies have underperformed relative to their peers in other industries by an average of nearly 15% over the past 18 years. 💡Idea: maybe #Boeing should INVEST in developing supplier relationships... not merely having backups but strategic and sincere. I am not holding my breath. For us, we're more than happy to instead provide our capacity and China-busting low prices for other customers who need #swissmachining to help them win more business, especially because they actually appreciate us.

Boeing is "bounced" off AS9100 IAQG committees after criminal fraud plea deal with gov't... But suppliers still forced to comply with new "climate change" provisions ✈️👈🤡 Full disclosure: a couple months ago I made a post stating we were exiting the commercial aviation market and not going to participate in any AS9100 climate change foolishness. We did that and are no longer certified, notified customers and removed all mention of it too. Y'all have fun ♻️🤡🫡 Anyways, on July 24, 2024, the U.S. Department of Justice filed with the United States District Court for the Northern District of Texas a proposed plea agreement with The Boeing Company. Basically the agreement means Boeing will have a *FELONY* conviction once the guilty plea agreement with prosecutors is accepted by the court in connection with fraud on 737 Max before two of the planes crashed, un-aliving 346 people off the coast of Indonesia and in Ethiopia. Boeing has apparently made the calculation that admitting to a crime is better than fighting the charge and enduring a long public trial... so they pled guilty. The Justice Department disclosed the agreement and said the fraud charge was “the most serious readily provable offense” it could bring against Boeing. As such, BCA has been formally ejected from the IAQG, and its representatives have been stripped of roles in all AS9100 and related standards committees. The IAQG justified the move by citing internal procedures that allow it to “suspend or withdraw (membership)for reasons linked to the application of embargo, export/import ban or other restrictive measures and/or sanctions imposed by (but not limited to) Government authorities.” Fyi, BCA requires its suppliers to achieve AS9100 certification, while it does not implement the standard for its own manufacturing operations -- did you know that none of the Boeing Commercial Airplane factories in Wash state and South Carolina are AS9100 certified? Nope they are not - Boeing (Commercial) has typically cited "lack of business case" for not getting certified themselves (although many Boeing defense factories like Long Beach and other divisions like Sevices are certified) But Boeing is not the only airplane company found guilty... In 2020, Airbus was forced to pay over $3.9 billion in international penalties related to bribery and export violations, which the Dept. of Justice called “the largest global foreign bribery resolution to date.” And RTX (Raytheon) got hit with $1.24 billion to resolve similar bribery charges, in a case that is still ongoing with the DoJ. Sikorsky and Derco (both owned by Lockheed) also fined $70 million after a whistleblower False Claims Act case revealed it routinely overcharged the US Navy. But... the IAQG has not taken action against them. 🤔🤔🤔 #aerospace #aviation #boeing #airbus #lockheed #raytheon #as9100

📢 IAM/Boeing Contract Proposal 2024 Update: Boeing has presented an updated contract proposal for its membership, which the IAM union leadership has endorsed and is recommending to members for consideration. This offer includes several significant enhancements from previous agreements: A 38% General Wage Increase (GWI) over four years, structured at 13%, 9%, 9%, and 7%, resulting in a total increase of 43.65% across the contract. A $12,000 ratification bonus that can be allocated as a paycheck contribution, directed to a 401K, or a combination of both—allowing flexibility for members. Union leaders recognize this offer as a pivotal outcome of the recent strike efforts and recommend it as a strong next step for members.
